Updated 11:45 p.m. Tuesday: FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Extensive flooding on Interstate 95 closed down parts of the highway going through Fairfield County in both directions late Tuesday.
In Greenwich, between exits 3 and 4, only one southbound lane was open, a dispatcher for the Connecticut State Police said just before 10 p.m.
Going north on I-95, the southbound side of the highway was closed at Exit 16, the dispatcher said. Complicating the situation was a car fire reported at about 10:15 p.m. south of Exit 17 southbound.
Norwalk Police Sgt. Joe Moquin said he realized at about 9 p.m. that the highway under East Avenue was flooding because traffic had slowed down. It was closed about an hour at Exit 16, he said.
Heavy machinery was used to clear debris under the overpass. Police on the scene said the road floods occasionally in that area.
The road at Exit 16 reopened at about 10:30 p.m. A Peter Pan bus was the first vehicle to make it through under East Avenue, as tractor-trailers continued their trek over the exit and entrance ramps, back onto the highway.
