Temperatures will creep into the 50s on Saturday, but the day will be dominated by clouds, showers and fog as winter kicks off. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. Cloud cover will moderate temperatures into the night with lows only dropping into the high 40s.
Sunday, the first full day of winter, will remain unseasonably warm with temperatures climbing into the 60s. Clouds and rain will remain in the forecast with a 60 percent chance of precipitation. Temperatures are expected to dip back into the 50s after sunset.
The Winter Solstice, or first day of winter, begins at 12:11 p.m. Dec. 21. On that day, the United States will see nine hours and 32 minutes of daylight.
The solstice occurs due to the Earth’s axis of rotation, which for the Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere is faced the farthest away from the sun. At this time, the sun is at the southernmost point in the sky -- 23.5 degrees south of the celestial equator known as the Tropic of Cancer.
