Although most major roads throughout Fairfield County had been cleared and treated, snow and ice on many side roads continued to make traveling difficult for motorists as late as Saturday. Frigid temperatures have also made it more difficult to clear snow and ice from roads and vehicles.
Shortly before 11 a.m. Saturday, a morning car vs. train accident in Danbury forced Metro-North operators to replace train service with buses. Rail service was restored later in the afternoon on the Danbury Branch.
No one was injured in the accident, but the cause was unclear, Metro-North spokesman Aaron Donovan said.
After being forced to cancel all of its flights Thursday – to the displeasure of many New Year’s travelers – Westchester County Airport continued to improve service, although several Jet Blue flights arriving and departing from Florida had to be canceled or delayed, according to airport operations personnel.
On Saturday, temperatures settled at in the mid 20s for most of the day, with winds peaking at nearly 10 mph. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures should dip slightly overnight, with a possible freezing drizzle into the morning. Temperatures are expected to rise Sunday to 40 degrees, with a chance of rain in the afternoon.
Monday will be rainy, with a chance of snow, and a high near 40 degrees. The deep freeze returns Tuesday with a high of 12 degrees, falling to near zero into the nighttime.
