GREENWICH, Conn. Elizabeth Ann 'Lisa' Zimmerman of Old Greenwich died Dec. 22 of heart failure at Yale-New Haven Hospital. She was 49.
Zimmerman was born in Denville, N.J., and raised in Montoursville, Pa. She graduated from Duke University in 1984 and spent a year working on Capitol Hill for U.S. Sen. Howard Metzenbaum. She then worked for a year at the National Institute of Health.
Zimmerman then received her medical degree at George Washington University and completed her masters in public health at the University of California at Berkeley. For three years she worked as a pediatrician for Clinicas de Salud del Pueblo in Calexico, Calif., for the U.S. Public Health Service before moving to San Francisco in 1997. She married Bruce Lavine that year. Their three children were born in the Bay Area before the family moved to London for three years in 2003.
In 2006, the family moved to Old Greenwich, where they were members of the Rocky Point Club and where Zimmerman served as a part-time pediatrician for the Firefly urgent care clinic in Stamford. She was an active volunteer at the International School at Dundee, which all three of her children attended.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Ben, Andy and Carly; two brothers, Jack and Jim Zimmerman; her sister, Laurie Pilling; and five nieces and nephews.
There will be a memorial service Friday, Jan. 6, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Zimmerman's name to Seeds of Peace and LitWorld.
