Dr. Forbes Delany, Greenwich Hospital Radiologist

Dr. Forbes Delany died March 31 at Nathaniel Witherell Nursing Home in Greenwich. He was 89 years old.

Delany was born in 1921 and was a Greenwich resident since 1952. A graduate of Dartmouth College and Dartmouth Medical School, he completed his medical studies at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1945. He was a Navy surgeon with the Marine Corps and supervised a medical center in Tsingtao, China.

He left New York Hospital to join Greenwich Hospital’s new radiology facility. Delany became the youngest physician to be made chief of the Greenwich Hospital medical staff in 1967 and performed the first CAT scan at the hospital in 1977. He was named director of radiology and nuclear medicine in 1972 and held this position until his retirement.  He joined the Greenwich Board of Health in 1997 and was the physician of record for the town until 2007. Delany also was elected to the RTM District 2 in 1998 and served through 2006.

He is survived by his wife Mary, six children and their spouses, and 12 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church of Greenwich. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Greenwich Adult Day Car, Nathaniel Witherall Nursing Home, or a charity of one’s choice.
