The bear, which was perched high above the parking lot behind 88 Main St., was drawing crowds by 9 a.m. But it was out of the tree by about 10:30 a.m. Biologists from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection tranquilized the cub and caught it in a net below, officials said.

As the cub slept in the parking lot, students from St. Peter's-Sacred Heart School were allowed to take a closer look. (See photos)

Mayor Mark Boughton said the bear cub was fine and was sleeping off the tranquilizer.

A DEEP truck was on its way to cart the bear off to the wilderness.
