Greenwich, Set Clocks Back Saturday Night As Daylight Saving Time Ends

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- The end of daylight saving time is much easier now, with most electronic devices automatically resetting themselves. But Fairfield County residents must remember to set back all their old-fashioned clocks late Saturday night or first thing Sunday morning.

At 2 a.m., Sunday, daylight saving time ends and clocks should be set one hour backward. In fall, everyone gets an extra hour for sleep or for whatever you want.

From 1986 to 2006, daylight saving time was observed from the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October. In 2005, President George W. Bush signed into law a broad energy bill that extended daylight saving time by four weeks beginning in 2007.

Daylight Saving Time is now observed from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, adding about a month of longer days.

Many fire departments remind residents that this is a good time to check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and change their batteries. The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates 16 million homes in the United State have malfunctioning smoke alarms, mostly because of dead or missing batteries.

The commission recommends consumers test each smoke alarm in their home every month to make sure it is working properly and change batteries at least once a year.
