Daily Voice Leaders: New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Westchester County is not an area commonly associated with affordable living. New Rochelle, however, headed by Mayor Noam Bramson, stands as a comparative oasis in an area often associated with crippling property taxes.

Under Bramson's watch, New Rochelle has achieved an effective tax rate that ranked 40th out of 42 mid-sized cities in New York State.

"We've been deeply committed to efficient government operations," Bramson told Daily Voice. "We watch every penny that comes to us and we try and sort out what is desirable from what is essential."

Bramson also said the city's government is one of the leanest in modern history in terms of workforce.  He also said refinancing some of the city's debts at lower interest rates have helped keep costs down.

Tax rates aren't the only thing staying low in New Rochelle on Bramson's watch. Crime rates are also at historic lows, with the city ranking among the top 10 percent in the nation with a population between 75,000 and 100,000.

"We're very proud of the partnership between our police force and the community," Bramson said. "We have men and women in blue who are deeply dedicated and professional; and who also recognize that having a relationship based on trust with the men and women that they serve is critically important to achieving public safety."

Even with low taxes and low crime to his credit, Bramson doesn't feel his job is done. He's seeking re-election in November.
