The project will update a small bridge over an unnamed brook on Black Rock Turnpike, near the intersection with John Read Road. The restoration will install a new bridge design, which will be better than the current span for native species.
“Native streambed material shall be placed within the culvert to provide a more natural environment for aquatic life,” the DOT said in a statement.
The construction will also widen the bridge for more road space and replace the existing metal guard rails with concrete parapets. Because the stretch is on a state road, the $640,000 cost will be paid for with state funding, not Redding’s town budget.
This summer the construction will close one lane of the road at a time in the work are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. while work is under way. Crews will direct alternating one-way traffic during the lane closures.
Work has started in the area already. After initial stage construction, the DOT will install signs in the area to alert drivers of the closure starting in early May. The project is scheduled to finish in November.
