That's a 4.2 percent increase over last year. AAA points to an improved economy and more liberal spending habits as some of the primary reasons for the rise.

A survey by AAA learned that 46 percent of people plan to travel Friday, Aug. 30, and 43 percent plan to return Monday, Sept. 2.

Another major reason for the anticipated increase in travel is the lower price of gas. Last year, the average price of gas in Connecticut was $4.01 compared with $3.94 this year.

AAA’s travel projections are based on economic forecasting and research by IHS Global Insight. The complete AAA / IHS Global Insight Independence Day 2013 Forecast can be found here.
