FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- There will be a small increase in travelers across Fairfield County and Connecticut for the holiday travel period, according to AAA Southern New England.

There will be an increase of only 0.7 percent of people traveling between Saturday, Dec. 21, and Wednesday, Jan. 1, as compared with last year. Nationally, the increased is estimated at 0.6 percent.

Travel experts are attributing this year’s small regional and national holiday increase to the country’s sluggish economic recovery. Even though the economy continues to improve, there’s still an air of uncertainty in the minds of travelers about spending money.

Of the overall 94.5 million people traveling nationally, 91 percent will travel by auto, a 0.9 percent increase over last year, six percent will travel by air, a 1.4 percent decrease, and the remaining three percent will take some other form of transportation.

Although the increase is small, AAA reports that the upward national trend marks the fifth consecutive year of increases during the year-end holiday period, according to its annual holiday travel survey.

In addition, the national number reflects the highest holiday travel volume the group has recorded for the season.

AAA’s projections are based on economic forecasting and research by IHS Global Insight. AAA has been reporting on holiday travel trends for more than two decades.
