Emily Fedorko, 16, died Aug. 6 in a water-tubing accident Wednesday on the waters of Long Island Sound off Greenwich Point. Emily was an Old Greenwich resident and would have been a junior in the fall at Greenwich High School.
She died after she was run over by a boat while water-tubing with three girlfriends, all 15 and 16 years old from Greenwich in what police called "a tragic accident.''
A second girl was injured in the accident.
Emily and the other girl were riding in an inner tube pulled by a 21-foot Wahoo center console recreational powerboat, police said. The two other teenage girls were aboard the boat.
Between 2 and 2:30 p.m., the two girls were dislodged from their tube. The boat operator made a turn to pick up the girls when the boat and its propeller collided with them, police said.
Emily sustained a fatal injury to her torso area and died at the scene.
The accident occurred 1 to 2 miles from the dock on the open waters of Captains Harbor on the Sound.
In another shocking death, Selectman David Theis, 65, died unexpectedly Dec. 23. A Republican, Theis was first elected to the Board of Selectmen in 2009 and was known for his humor and connection with town residents.
Theis was a third generation Greenwich resident and attended Greenwich Public Schools. After graduating from Greenwich High School, he went on to receive a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of New Haven.
He worked as a first vice president in the private client group at Wells Fargo in the Old Greenwich office.
In other news in town, Greenwich remained solidly in the GOP camp in Hartford as voters elected Republicans for its three state representatives and state senator.
Livvy Floren, 149th District, cruised to victory after her Democrat opponent, Marc Abrams, suspended his campaign due to pressure from senior state Democrats, including Gov. Dannel P. Malloy. Abrams was named in a lawsuit, accusing him of sexual harassment while a partner at hedge fund Titan Capital Group.
In the 151st District, incumbent Fred Camillo didn't face any challengers. Newcomer Mike Bocchino, 150th District, fended off a strong challenge from Democrat Jill Oberlander to retain the district for the Republicans.
Incumbent state Sen. L. Scott Frantz, R-36th District, easily won re-election over his Green Party challenger Ed Heflin.
But Greenwich millionaire Tom Foley, a Republican, failed to beat incumbent Gov. Dannel Malloy in a rematch of their 2010 gubernatorial race.
And one Democrat from Greenwich was successful, as Jim Himes won his fourth straight race in the U.S. House of Representatives. He beat Dan Debicella even as Republicans made strong challenges for House seats nationwide. The GOP increased its dominance in the U.S. House and gained control of the U.S. Senate.
