"It is so great to be recognized," said Co-President Gillis Baxter. "It will definitely help with our future projects."
Students from Greenwich and southern Fairfield County established the Youth@Bruce volunteer group to encourage high school students to become active volunteers at the Bruce Museum. The group currently has 16 members and has logged more than 2,000 hours of participating in museum activities.
"Having the recognition makes you think, 'Wow, we are doing great things,'" said Mary Ann Lendenmann, the Bruce Museum's youth coordinator. "These are high school kids getting great job experience."
The Youth Inspired Challenge is a result of President Obama's initiative to get student into museums and become the creative thinkers of the their generation. The program encourages education in STEM, or science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
