WalletHub Ranks Conn. 4th Best State For Underprivileged Kids

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Personal finance social network WalletHub has released its list of 2014’s Best and Worst States for Underprivileged Children, and Connecticut made the top 10 list.

According to the report, Connecticut ranked No. 4 overall. New Hampshire took the top spot, and Mississippi came in last.

WalletHub ranked the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 16 key metrics, including infant death rates, children in foster care, child food insecurity rates and percentage of maltreated children, among others, according to the report.

Children's Living & Economic Conditions in Connecticut (1=best)

4th – Percentage of children in households with below-poverty income

28th – Percentage of maltreated children

13th – Child food insecurity rate

4th – Percentage of children without health insurance

12th – Infant death rate

10th – Homeless persons in families per capita

28th – Percentage of children in foster care

20th – Percentage of children in single-parent families

14th – Children living in renter-occupied housing units to children living in owner-occupied housing units ratio
