A talk dubbed "The Psychology of Sport Optimizing athletic development: The Role of the Parent Guest Speaker" with Darren Treasure will be held on Thursday, Jan. 29, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Eastern Greenwich Civic Center, 90 Harding Road, Old Greenwich. A growing body of research and anecdotal evidence has been presented addressing decisions related to optimal training, competition, and recovery in youth sport. Books such as Daniel Coyle’s “The Talent Code,” David Epstein’s “The Sports Gene” and Malcolm Gladwell’s “Outliers” have put the discussion concerning the role of nature versus nurture in the process of athletic development squarely in the public conscious.
This presentation will focus on current knowledge about athletic development. It will describe the characteristics of expert athletes and three distinct stages of talent development. The role of parents in this process will also be discussed, highlighting findings that show how they help, but sometimes hinder, the athletic development and sport experience of their children.
Treasure has provided performance psychology support to Olympic and world champion athletes who have competed and won at the highest echelons of collegiate and professional sport. In addition to his practical experience, he has been a highly productive research professor at the University of Illinois and Arizona State University.
Treasure resides in Portland, Ore., where he provides performance psychology support for Nike's Oregon Project.
