FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- As predicted, snow began falling Monday at about dusk and was accumulating by early evening in Fairfield County.
Several inches of snow could fall overnight, according to the National Weather Service, which issued a winter storm warning for northern Fairfield County and a winter weather advisory for southern Fairfield County.
The warnings were in effect until 10 a.m. Tuesday. Snow was expected to mix with sleet and freezing rain overnight. Rain will fall during the day Tuesday, the National Weather Service says.
Three to six inches of snow could be on the ground by Tuesday morning in the northern parts of the county along with a tenth- to a quarter-inch of ice to the area.
The southern parts of the county could see 2 to 4 inches of snow with a trace of ice. The waters of Long Island Sound were under a gale warning with high winds and waves of 2 to 4 feet predicted, the weather service said.
"The combination of an accumulation of ice on an accumulation of snow will make travel dangerous, especially during the Tuesday morning rush hour," the National Weather Service says.
For Wednesday, the first day of spring, expect sunny skies and high temperatures in the upper 30s, the weather service said.
