NORWALK, Conn. -- The Wall Street Theater in Norwalk will mark its official opening after an extensive, $10 million restoration, with a ceremonial lighting of its marquee on Friday evening.

The 700-seat theater, located at 71 Wall St., was originally built in 1915 and has been transformed into a next-generation performance space that will showcase professional music, comedy, dance and stage performances. In keeping with the 100-year-old history of the building, the blade and marquee sign will serve as a beacon for emerging artists and performers showcasing their talents.

Originally known as The Regent Theatre, the venue has also been known as The Norwalk, The Roxy and The Globe. It has boasted vaudeville performances, showing of classic blockbusters such as "Jaws" and "The Blues Brothers," and featured then-emerging artists such as the Beastie Boys, Lil' Kim, and the Allman Brothers.

It shuttered its doors in the late 90s, and remained dark until it reopened as The Wall Street Theater in the summer of 2017. Under the direction of President Suzanne Cahill, developer Frank Farricker, artistic director Billy Blanks, Jr., concert director Gene Morell and an advisory board, the theater is planning on offering a dynamic performance space while enriching arts education for families, mentoring programs for youth in theater, summer camp programming, and private rentals.

The sign lighting will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, and coincides with the Downtown Norwalk First Friday events. Local musicians and artists will perform during a cocktail reception following the lighting.
