“We find that this is the grade that most students start understanding the process of careers,” explained Martha Rodriquez, school counselor at Isaac E. Young Middle School. “Our biggest hope is that we ignite a passion in some of the students for a future career.”

The purpose of the event is to broaden the students’ knowledge regarding all the careers available, especially those they have never heard of before.

“We also want them to understand that there is a correlation of what they learn in school to what they will do later and their potential earnings,” said Rodriguez.

The schools try to follow and abide by a model that the American School Counselors Association developed. The model shifts the attention from everyday school to one of college and career readiness.

Students at IYMS received their own personal schedule for the day, which included attending four different career sessions, plus a session about college and the college process. Students at Albert Leonard Middle School were exposed to three presentations – two on careers and one in which NRHS students engaged the seventh-graders in a conversation about their own college preparatory experience.

“This valuable program encourages our students to make informed choices throughout their high school years as well as reinforces the importance of getting a head start in career planning,” added Robin Lieberman, school counselor at ALMS. “And it's a day for the students to dress for success.”

At both schools, seniors from New Rochelle High School were present to discuss and share important information about making informed choices at NRHS and college. Professions represented included architect, chef, engineer, lawyer, physician, nurse, teacher, politician, educator, television producer, author, journalist, medical director and more.
