Paper bags were distributed to Greenwich residents by mail carriers and filled with donations of nonperishable food items. The letter carriers and 30 additional volunteers delivered the food to Neighbor To Neighbor's headquarters at Christ Church and sorted the goods as well.

“I could not believe how generous the people of Greenwich were,” letter carrier Sonny Migliaccio said in the statement. “Many people left more than one bag outside filled with everything a family might need.”

It rained the day of the pickup, but Neighbor to Neighbor Executive Director Nancy Coughlin said in the statement that despite the weather, the drive was a fantastic success.

"We are so grateful to the letter carriers as well as the 30  volunteers who came out despite the rain to help unload vans and sort food," Coughlin said in the statement. "We also have to thank the many Greenwich Country Day School students, Brownie Troop 50519, Girl Scout Troop 50638 at Old Greenwich School, Boy Scout Pack 37 and adult volunteers who patiently stapled the Neighbor to Neighbor 'shopping list' to over 30,000 bags. This really was a community event.”

Coughlin estimated the 32,500 pounds of food would last about three months.

According to the statement, about 520 families -- about 1,000 individuals -- living in Greenwich are eligible to receive food every week. Eligibility is determined by the Greenwich Department of Social Services and other referring groups.
