GREENWICH, Conn. -- Local author Jay Chalnick will be launching his new book, "Finding Buddha," at several locations throughout Fairfield County.
Chalnick pulled inspiration from his own experiences with loss and purpose, and the comfort he has found in Buddhist ideals and philosophy in the book, "Finding Budda."
The story is about Hubert “Bode” Price, a 5-year-old boy from Westport who is on a cross-country road trip with his widowed father. While the narrative follows the pair's adventure across the United States and Baja, Mexico, the backdrop of the story details a more culturally significant event occurring on the other side of the globe: China is threatening to appoint the next Dalai Lama despite the protestations of Tibetan Buddhists.
During the course of just 10 months in 2009-10, Chalnick endured a series of unfortunate events, including the death of his beloved 10-year-old golden retriever, spending four days during Christmas in the hospital with his mom, his dad’s heart attack a few weeks later, his mom’s stroke and untimely death just two months later, and the subsequent layoff from his job.
In 2010, Chalnick came across a highly influential book called "When Things Fall Apart" by Buddhist nun, Pema Chodron, which instantly changed his worldview and taught him how to make sense of things. He found the book so valuable he wanted the narrator in Finding Buddha to cherish it as well so that others might discover it one day. Book launch dates and locations include:
