GREENWICH, Conn. The following letter is from Greenwich resident Dan Fitzgerald in support of Board of Education candidate Anna Saras Povinelli:
I am a 16-year town resident, which some would say makes me only first generation, but I feel I understand the benefits and needs of Greenwich as well as any multi-generational individual.
I have four children, all of whom attend private schools, as the public schools appear to have lost their way. However, I pay a very substantial tax bill, place an extremely high value on a quality education, and I also CARE very much about how my tax dollars are being spent and the return we are receiving on those dollars. The reputation of our school system is directly correlated to our real estate values. When I hear people bypassing buying in Greenwich because other neighboring towns have better school systems, I am angered.
I know how boards operate as I serve and have served on several. I am displeased with the BOE and it's lack of management, misguided priorities, poor accountability and lack of transparency.
We have one of the highest per pupil costs and yet our test scores are one of the lowest in Fairfield County. I hear data is constantly being analyzed, but what I dont hear is what changes are being made to improve education.
I also hear that many students who are non-residents are attending our schools and that the administration just looks the other way.
We all have a golden opportunity to select the Republican members of the board, since the Democratic Party has only nominated two candidates for two spots.
We need to ensure that the Republican members will demand accountability and transparency in our schools and work toward better results.
One candidate who I know will be able to deliver on that charge is Anna Saras Povinelli.
She has worked for companies that deliver results, and knowing Anna, she can deliver results. She also has four great kids who are all in our three public school divisions and she knows what is going on in the classes and schools, so she doesnt have to rely on others for information.
My vote is for Anna Saras Povinelli.
