Genealogy researcher and teacher Janeen Bjork will present a survey of the major newspaper websites and a look at optical character recognition, or OCR.
OCR is the technology that allows newspapers to be “read” and indexed by computers, making it possible to search newspapers online.
Bjork will share case studies drawn from both the distinguished and the notorious members of her family tree.
Family history novices will learn how and where to start searching, and best practices for getting the most from both the free and the subscription sites of U.S. newspapers.
Bjork is the resident genealogy teacher at the Greenwich Senior Center where she has helped those who wanted to seek out, trace and record their family histories.
This program is open to all at no charge and will be held in the Meeting Room of the library at 101 W. Putnam Ave.
