Hikes, Trail Cleanup Highlight Trails Day Events In Greenwich

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Events at the Babcock Reserve and Mianus River Park in Greenwich will be just some of the 259 events in 152 Connecticut towns to celebrate National Trails Day this weekend.

A nature walk starting at the Babcock Preserve and continuing into the Westfall Preserve will be held on Saturday, June 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The walk will cover about 3 miles of forest and wetlands and will end up back at Babcock Preserve. The guided walk will meet at the Babcock Preserve parking lot off North Street, which is a half-mile north of the Merritt Parkway/North Street intersection. The walk is sponsored by The Greenwich Land Trust. It will be canceled in the case of rain. For information and to preregister, contact leader Matt Spinner at 203-629-2151 or matt@gltrust.org.

At Mianus River Park on the Stamford-Greenwich border, a trail maintenance event will be held Saturday, June 1, from 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The Friends of Mianus River Park and Fairfield County New England Mountain Bike Association will join forces to lead a three-hour volunteer trail cleanup of the Mianus River Park. The organizations recommend hiking shoes, gloves and water. Volunteers will be guided along 3 miles of trail for the project. All tools will be provided, as well as refreshments and lunch. Meet project leader Ryan Tucker at 8:45 a.m. for sign in at the Merriebrook Lane Bridge in Stamford. Event is rain or shine. Preregistration is appreciated by emailing MianusTM@gmail.com.

Also at Mianus River Park, there will be a hike from 8 to 10 a.m. Sunday, June 2, starting from the Merriebrook Lane parking lot in Stamford. The hike will pass through rock outcroppings, wooded ledges and small knolls and is categorized as easy to moderate level hiking. Pre-teen and teens are especially welcome with their parents. Water and hiking shoes/boots are recommended. Event, which is sponsored by Eastern Mountain Sports Stamford, will be held rain or shine. Preregistration is not required. For those looking for more of a challenge, another hike will take place out of the Mianus River Park on Sunday, June 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The hike will traverse through some lesser-known trails and cover a total distance of 6 miles. Dogs are welcome but must stay on their leashes and be well behaved. Meet leaders David Roberts and Pete Sofman in the parking lot by the Red Barn on Merriebrook Lane in Stamford. Rain will cancel event, which is sponsored by Friends of Mianus River Park. Preregistration is not necessary. For questions, contact David Roberts at drossr@aol.com.
