Have a Blast Sculpting Sand at Greenwich Point

GREENWICH, Conn. — Get ready to mark your territory at Greenwich Point and shovel sand into art for this year’s Sand Blast! Sand Sculpture Festival on Saturday.

The annual Sand Blast!, sponsored and judged by the Greenwich Arts Council and First County Bank, will feature a special sculpture on the beach created by Wilfred Stijger and Edith Van De Wetering, internationally recognized professional sand sculptors.

The duo won the 2010 Virginia Beach Sand Building Championship, one of the most significant sand building events in the world. The sculpture has been commissioned for this year’s Sand Blast! by Mary Gibbon Inc.

The sand sculpture festival has no set theme. Instead, participants are encouraged to indulge their imaginations while creating art in the sand. Last year’s Sand Blast! featured Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea; a fleet of sailboats; and a giant seastar. In year’s past, sculptures were judged. But this year’s festival will give ribbons and First County Bank T-shirts to all participants.

The Sand Blast! will take place at Greenwich Point, located at Tods Driftway and Shore Road in Old Greenwich, from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Participation is free. Call 203-862-6750 for more information.
