Robert "Bob" Edward Diamond Jr., who has owned a home in Greenwich, turns 63 on Sunday. The banker was born July 27, 1951, in Concord, Mass. Diamond began his career as a lecturer at the School of Business at the University of Connecticut from 1976-1977. He then briefly worked for United States Surgical Corporation in Norwalk, Conn. in the IT Department. He joined Morgan Stanley in 1979 and held several positions. He rose to the post of managing director and head of the fixed income trading division. Diamond, Jr. moved to CS First Boston in 1992, and later to Barclays in 1996. He rose to become chief executive of Barclays Capital and was appointed president of Barclays in 2005. In 2010, he became its Deputy Group Chief Executive; and in January 2011, succeeded John Varley as group chief executive of Barclays. He resigned as chief executive of Barclays on July 3, 2012. Diamond, Jr. has dual U.S.-U.K. citizenship, and was voted 37th in the U.K. magazine New Statesman’s annual survey of the world's 50 People Who Matter 2010. In 2011 he was included in the 50 Most Influential ranking of Bloomberg Markets magazine. On Nov. 28, 2013, Diamond, Jr. and entrepreneur Ashish Thakkar founded Atlas Mara. The company was listed on the London Stock Exchange on Dec.17, 2013 through an IPO which raised $325 million.
