Kathleen Hartington Kennedy Townsend, who was born July 4, 1951, in Greenwich, turns 63 on Friday. She is the daughter of Ethel Skakel Kennedy and the late U.S. Sen. Robert F. Kennedy. 

Townsend was the sixth lieutenant governor of Maryland from 1995 to 2003. During her tenure, she focused on reducing crime and promoting economic development.

Since leaving office, she has written the book, "Failing America's Faithful: How Today's Churches Are Mixing God with Politics and Losing Their Way," published by Warner Books in 2007. Townsend also contributes to The Recovering Politician website started by Jonathan Miller.

In December 2010, she was appointed chair of American Bridge, a nonprofit that raises funds for Democratic candidates and causes.

She is the chairman of the Institute for Human Virology at the University of Maryland. She is on the boards of directors of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, the Points of Light Foundation, the Center for American Progress and Catholic Democrats. She is also on the Board of Selectors of Jefferson Awards for Public Service.
