The Bruce Museum is dusting off its fossils for an evening of hands-on activities in honor of National Fossil Day on Wednesday.
Family Fossil Fun Night will include a hunt featuring fossils from all groups of animals and plants: the dinosaur Ceolophysis, the pterosaur (flying reptile) Pterodactylus, the early bird Archeopteryx, a mud lobster, nautiloids, a water scorpion, trilobites, cone corals and horses. There will also be fossil casting in the museum's education workshop. Science curator and paleontologist Gina Gould will talk about collecting, preserving and interpreting fossils.
National Fossil Day promotes awareness of fossils' educational value. Fossils tell tales of ancient life through different species and eras of the Earth. In U.S. national parks, fossil finds range from primitive algae in Glacier National Park to ice age animals in the caves of the Grand Canyon.
The event will go from 4 to 6 p.m. It is free for museum members and children under the age of 5. General admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors. For more information, call (203) 869-0376.
