The overhaul is the brainchild of new Director of Congregational Learning Barry Gruber, a 20-year veteran of Jewish teachings with previous stops in Rochester, N.Y., and most recently in Minneapolis.
Gruber's aims are to have smaller classes with more emphasis on individual teaching, greater flexibility and a diverse curriculum aimed at celebrating Jewish heritage.
“Coming this September, parents and students will find that the new Temple Sholom Learning Center is indeed ‘Jewish Education Reimagined,’” says Gruber. “These changes are based on what we’ve learned, through surveys and focus groups, about what issues concerned parents most. We have enriched our educational offerings accordingly.”
The retooled schedule is designed to offer four hours a week of study, two and a half hours on Sunday and an extra 90 minutes during the week. Parents and students are allowed to pick what weekday works best for them – Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.
Class size is expected to be no greater than 10 students per teacher, and children from pre-kindergarten age through seventh grade are welcome to attend.
Membership to Temple Sholom is required.
