GREENWICH, Conn. -- A virtual food drive to help out a local social service organization is relying on the generosity of Greenwich citizens.

Greenwich Youth Football League and Greenwich Jr United Way have partnered to support Neighbor to Neighbor.

The public can help by making donations on the GJrUW page on the "Amp Your Good" website through Nov. 23.

An end-of-the-season award will go to the football team in whose name most pounds of food has been donated. The teams are North Mianus Bulldogs, Cos Cob Crushers, Putnam Generals, BANC Raiders, Riverside Gators and Glenville Mavericks.

The team will be recognized at an awards ceremony.

"By partnering with the Jr United Way we will raise awareness by utilizing the greatest resource any community has, our children," GYFL President Frank Sarcone said of the joint effort.

Greenwich United Way CEO David Rabin has coached the BANC Raiders for 15 years and believes this partnership will help Greenwich youths understand the true meaning of sportsmanship.

"Our football players and cheerleaders will have the opportunity to really help their neighbors and understand that their work on and off the field is equality important," Rabin said.

The collaboration came about over the summer when Jr United Way volunteers at Neighbor To Neighbor learned about the food pantry's supplemental food program for Greenwich families.

The Greenwich Jr United Way was created by local teens to enable them to get involved in solving problems in their community.

All middle school and high school students in Greenwich are eligible to volunteer. Click here for more information.
