Greenwich Woman's Father Was 'Monument Man' Before Team Depicted In Movie

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Longtime Cos Cob resident Florence Phillips doesn't need to see the new movie "The Monuments Men" that hit theaters on Friday, Jan. 7. She learned all about it from her father, Mason Hammond, who was the first "Monument Man," according to greenwichtime.com.

A Cos Cob resident's father was one of the original "Monument Men" who helped inspire the new movie starring George Clooney.

Phillips' father's involvement in rescuing works of art and archives out of North Africa happened before the storyline in the movie starring George Clooney, Bill Murray, Matt Damon and John Goodman, but Robert Edsel, the author of the book that inspired the movie told greenwichtime.com that Hammond was the man that was given the job of testing out the assignment.

Phillips had the chance to meet with Edsel during a lecture at Yale University and told greenwichtime.com that she appreciates the film for the attention it brought to her father's cause.
