GREENWICH, Conn. – More than 40 teens from Temple Sholom in Greenwich recently prepared 50 Thanksgiving meals for senior citizens in need.

The annual Teen Thanksgiving Cooking volunteer event was held Tuesday, Nov. 25.

Youth Director and Assistant Rabbi David Saiger, along with several parents of participating teenagers, supervised the efforts.

"The well-attended activity is a highlight of the season for the young volunteers and is an example of the Jewish tradition of tzedakah, which is rooted in the word justice or fairness,” Saiger said in a press release.

“In Judaism, giving to the poor is not viewed as a generous act rather an act of justice, giving the poor their due.”

Volunteers deliver the meals to residents of low-income senior housing communities in Greenwich.

For more information about participating in next year’s Teen Thanksgiving Cooking event or other youth volunteer programs at Temple Sholom, call Assistant Rabbi David Saiger 203-542-7163 or email him at ravdavid@templesholom.com .
