The first event scheduled is a Student Leadership Council meeting for Thursday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. Students gather at Teen Central on the second floor of the library to brainstorm about using resources to launch projects in exchange for community service hours. Refreshments are served, and all students in grades 7 through 12 are welcome.

The next night sees a 'Friday Night Chess' session with National Master Rich Jackson, starting at 7 p.m. Jackson will be there to give instruction, supervise play and challenge students to an occasional match. All ages and skill levels are welcome, and  no registration is required.

Thursday, Dec. 18, is when the monthly Middle School Book Club reading occurs, starting at 4:30 p.m. Students in grades six through eight can talk about Lynda Mullally Hunt's "One for the Murphys."

The book covers the experiences of foster kid Carley, who uses humor and street smarts to cope with her crazy life until the large Murphy family offers her more stability. Register for the program and pick up a copy of the book at the second floor reference desk

Also of note is an appearance by music and culture writer Amanda Petrusich on Thursday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. as part of the ongoing AuthorsLive series. Petrusich has written for Spin, Buzzfeed and The New York Times.
