Anderson was president of the League of Women Voters of Greenwich for three years and continued in her leadership position as a member of the Steering Committee for another three years. Under her leadership, the Greenwich League grew in membership to become the fifth largest league in the U.S. Her spirit, energy and commitment helped propel the league to become an even more active and vital force in the community.
She has overseen all aspects of the organization from developing voter education programs to continuing league sponsorship of candidates’ debates for public office. Under her leadership, the league developed and completed a study on the functions of the Representative Town Meeting. Recommendations from this study will be part of the league’s advocacy and educational efforts for the coming years.
Perhaps of most importance to the league has been Anderson’s ability to introduce the league to a new generation of people and, in turn, to help them understand and participate in the league’s main mission: encouraging every citizen to actively participate in democracy. She has helped the league renew, develop and revitalize as it moves to a celebration of its 95th anniversary in October.
Many Greenwich organizations have been the beneficiaries of Anderson’s generosity. In addition to her contributions to the league, she has held leadership positions at First Congregational Church of Greenwich, Riverside Yacht Club, Greenwich Academy and Greenwich Public Schools. A cum laude graduate of Williams College, she was recognized by the YWCA of Greenwich with its Spirit of Greenwich Award in 2015.
The Mary Award is named for Mary Lou Woods and Mary Sullivan, two long-term members of the league who were highly visible and effective in their work for the league.
