Greenwich Jewish Community Fills Food Pantry

STAMFORD, Conn. – Person-to-Person, Inc., collected more than 1,200 bags of groceries during the 2012 Jewish Community High Holy Day Food Drive. Volunteers from Person-to-Person and eight Jewish houses of worship in Stamford and Greenwich worked together unloading and sorting the donations of food, with more donations still coming in.

The High Holy Day Food Drive began more than 20 years ago and continues with the support of the Jewish community. Each year, adults and children at Jewish houses of worship in Stamford and Greenwich collect food during the High Holy Days, between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.  The High Holy Day Food Drive is part of the Jewish tradition of “Tikkun Olam,” which means 'healing and repairing the world' in Hebrew.

Temple Beth El, Congregation Agudath Sholom, Chavurat Aytz Chayim, Fellowship for Jewish Learning, Young Israel of Stamford, Chabad of Stamford, Chavurat Deevray Torah of Greenwich, and Temple Sinai were some of the Jewish houses of worship that provided groceries during the High Holy Day Food Drive

Last year, the Person-to-Person Food Pantry provided groceries for more than 170,000 meals for low-income families in Fairfield County. The agency continues to see the need for this resource increase this year. The groceries collected during the High Holy Day Food Drive are a major source of contributions for the Emergency Food Pantry, and help to provide for individuals and families throughout the year.

Person-to-Person, Inc. , a 501(c)(3) non-profit agency, was originally established in 1968 with a mission to provide assistance to low-income individuals and families living in lower Fairfield County, and to help them on their journey towards self-sufficiency. A volunteer-driven agency, Person-to-Person engages more than 2,000 volunteers in service each year, and remains flexible in direct response to community and client needs. In 2011, Person-to-Person served nearly 22,000 people.
