GREENWICH, Conn. Janet Faucett Schofield, a longtime resident of Greenwich, died May 5 at The Nathaniel Witherell nursing center. She was 99.
A dedicated volunteer, Schofield's favorite role was that of "the hat lady" at Greenwich Hospital, where she hand-knitted more than 2,500 hats for premature babies over the years.
She was born on April 8, 1913, in Stamford to John Faucett and Ada Bishop Faucett and raised between Stamford and Lakeland, Fla. Schofield returned to Stamford to raise her family, before moving to Greenwich in 1964, after the death of her husband, John J. Schofield.
After retiring from Fawcett CBS Publications, Schofield began volunteering throughout the town of Greenwich. Her regular volunteer schedule included Greenwich Hospital, Meals-on-Wheels, Greenwich Health Association, Greenwich Library and the First Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Diane (Michael) Owens, of Sammamish, Wash., and Margaret "Peg" (Rudy) Hroziencik, of Greenwich; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by four sisters and a brother.
Visitation is from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Thursday at Fred D. Knapp Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be private.
