The poetry contest is aimed at high school students in grades 9 through 12. Student poets may submit one original poem of no more than 20 lines, accompanied by a completed entry form.
The deadline for submissions is Thursday, April 20, at 4 p.m.
“Our 2nd Annual Poetry Contest, in honor of National Poetry Month, offers our community a welcome opportunity to celebrate not only the joy of words, but the talents of our young people,” said Kate Guthrie, director of academic services of Greenwich Education Group. “Last year’s entries were impressive not only for their creativity, but for the wide variety in expression taken by the students.”
Poems will be judged for originality, creativity and artistic quality. There are no entry fees, and no purchase is required. Amazon gift cards for $200, $100 and $50 will be awarded for first, second and third place winners. Winners will be announced no later than May 15, and they will notified by phone or email.
The winners and their poems will be published on GEG and Arch Street’s websites.
Winners will also be invited to read their poems at The Greenwich Grind Coffee House at Arch Street on May 21.
Last years winners were: first place, Jo DeWaal, now a Greenwich Academy sophomore, for "Crescendo;" second place, current Greenwich Academy senior, Jordyn Young, for "What Could Be;" and third place, Brittany Loveless, current Greenwich High School junior, for "A Difference, A Miss."
The 2014 winning entries are posted on the Greenwich Education Group website under Poetry Contest 2014. Greenwich Education Group has proudly partnered with Arch Street Greenwich Teen Center in sponsoring this year’s contest.
“Coffee shops and poetry have gone together for decades. We are always looking for new activities for our students and the Poetry Contest seemed like a natural fit for Arch Street’s newly opened Greenwich Grind Coffee Shop. We are thrilled to have the contest winners read their poems there in May,” said Kyle Silver, executive director of Arch Street.
