Greenwich Comedian Mixes Irish Roots, Family Antics For Palace Show

GREENWICH, Conn. -- The Greenwich country clubs, the women in pearls, the use of "summer" as a verb: That has been the fodder for much of Jane Condon's comedy -- at least when she's performing in the tri-state area -- and it's what you can expect in her "Colleens of Comedy" show at The Palace in Stamford on March 13.

You can also expect, since we're close to St. Patrick's Day, a host of Irish jokes, many of which stem from her childhood growing up as the youngest of four girls in a blue-collar town outside Boston with grandparents straight from the Emerald Isle.

"Only the Irish say we don't have drinking problems, but I've been the designated driver since I was 11," she said.

The Greenwich mom of two, winner of "Audience Favorite" on NBC's "Last Comic Standing," has long mixed her family's antics with her comedy. In fact, she said she started her career -- she was a "late bloomer" at age 37 -- standing on a Fischer Price picnic table at a fundraiser at Round Hill Nursery School in Greenwich.

Another early show was held at Christ Church, where a patrician gentleman told her afterward, "You're so funny. I almost laughed out loud."

She said that when she first moved to the area she thought everyone would be a snob. "But the supermarket cashiers have been very nice to me. If I forget my pearls, they lend me some."

And though she uses her Greenwich background less and less these days -- though she'll often say in her act it explains the way she looks (hint: a tad conservative) -- she's clearly having a blast dishing on motherhood, teenage boys, politics and daily observations.

"I like to say the first third of my life was my crazy family in Brockton, Massachusetts; the second was my 'normal' family here in Greenwich, my husband and kids -- it was my husband who got us into the country clubs here by the way -- and the third is all about me," she said.

"Once I came out of the comedy closet, I found my tribe."
