GREENWICH, Conn. – Two budding artists from Greenwich have been selected to compete in the National Boys & Girls Club of America fine arts exhibit.
Fourteen members from the Greenwich club submitted art works for the regional competition featuring 500 entries from Boys & Girls Clubs throughout the northeast. Anika Gupta won for her monochromatic self-portrait drawing in the 6-8-year-old age group. Betsy Dasilva also won for her pastel drawing of a pencil in the 9-12-year-old age group.
“I am so proud of the girls and ALL of our members and their entries,” said Stephanie Pugliese, education/technology coordinator, in a prepared statement.
As regional winners, the girls’ pieces will move along for national viewing in Atlanta at the Boys & Girls Club of America headquarters. The club will be notified of the 2012 national winners in June. If either of the girls’ pieces is recognized as a national winner, it will stay on exhibit in Atlanta for a year.
The yearly competition aims to promote artistic expression among club members ages 6-18, while providing opportunities for members to create artwork to display locally. Up to 37 pieces of art — one piece per age group and category, and one for the Group Project category — are selected from a club’s local exhibit and sent to one of seven regional judging events. Artwork is then chosen and sent to the Boys & Girls Club National Headquarters for the National Fine Arts Exhibit.
