GREENWICH, Conn. --- Janet Muller will be the first to tell you yoga helped with her battle against breast cancer.
"It kept me grounded and positive through what was a difficult time," she said. Now cancer-free, the Greenwich resident is fulfilling a lifelong dream with the opening of Beyond Yoga Studio in Rye, N.Y.
The official opening was Monday, March 20 though there will be an open house on Saturday, March 25 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
A longtime teacher -- she's a certified member of the American Council on Exercise, and 200hour Yoga Certified (meaning she's certified to teach Yoga for Cancer classes) -- the timing felt right to go out on her own.
"It's been a personal ambition of mine to motivate those in my life to strive towards balance, peace, and harmony on a consistent basis," she said.
And, since she grew up in Rye and has taught in town for many years, this seemed like the perfect spot. "My heart is kneaded within the community," she said.
Her goal is to offer an environment where optimism is contagious. "It will be a home for yoga and other wellness initiatives with a vision to embrace wellness, healing, transformation, discovery, compassion, and courage," she said.
She continues to work with Soul Ryeders , a volunteer-driven charitable organization committed to empowering those in Westchester who are affected by all types of cancer. She's been a volunteer since 2011 and is collaborating with them to offer yoga and restoration classes to support their most dedicated volunteers as well as clients going through cancer treatment and survivorship.
Beyond Yoga Studio is located at 22 Purchase Street, Suite 4, 203-241-1929, www.beyondyoga.org .
