Open House Day is a statewide event created to encourage Connecticut residents to enjoy and serve as local ambassadors for the state's cultural treasures.
From noon to 2 p.m., artist Carol Nipomnich Dixon will lead a workshop on designing two-dimensional collages crafted from papers, fabrics, photographs, found objects and natural materials. All art supplies will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring copies of favorite photos, newspaper articles or other items to incorporate into their work. The drop-in workshop will take place in the Vanderbilt Education Center, and all ages are welcome.
Letterboxing began in 1854 when a hiking guide left a bottle with his calling card near Duck's Pool in Dartmoor in southern England for others to find. Today's letterboxing no longer requires a calling card, but Open House visitors can experience a "box-hunt" by starting at the Storehouse Gallery, where they will receive clues and a personal log before ranging over Bush-Holley Historic Site to find a hidden letterbox. As they follow a trail of clues, they'll learn why Bush-Holley Historic Site is so important to our town's history.
Family-friendly tours of Bush-Holley House will take place at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m., and Greenwich Voices, an "audio exhibition," where visitors can tune in to hear diverse reflections on life in Greenwich, will be open throughout the event.
The popular Valencia Luncheria truck, offering lunch and snacks for purchase, will be parked on the premises all afternoon.
