The Bruce Museum of Greenwich launches a series of education events this weekend in honor of the late Diane W. Darst.
The Diane W. Darst Learning to Look® Family Art Appreciation Lectures are designed to help families and children better understand art. The first lectures runs from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. It is presented as part of the museums exhibitions "Cindy Sherman: Works From Friends of the Bruce Museum" and "Human Connections: Figural Art From the Bruce Museum Collection." Darst, a Greenwich resident and co-founder of a national art education program, died last year.
During Sunday's program families will learn about portrait art and children will be able to create their own self-portrait in the Education Workshop using a variety of media, including photography and collage.
Darst was director and co-founder of Learning to Look, an art history and appreciation program for students offered by more than 1,500 teachers in the tri-state area.
The series continues on June 26 with Learning to Look at Picasso and Printmaking. The lecture will complement the museums exhibit of Picassos etchings.
All activities are free with museum admission and suitable for ages 5 and up. Reservations for the lecture series are suggested: Call (203) 869-0376. The Bruce Museum is at 1 Museum Drive. General admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and students and free for children under 5. Admission is free to all on Tuesdays. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday and closed Mondays. Museum exhibition tours are held Fridays at 12:30 p.m.
