The three-hour event, which was held early last month and drew more than 135 kids, was initiated by the Sport Center’s owner, Tim Shea. It raised $2,700 for The Red Cross and included games of soccer, dodge ball and capture the flag inside the facility’s bubble.

Turf director Stuart Smith and many of his colleagues volunteered their time. Smith said it was nice to see so many families and friends participate in the event.

Under the staff's supervision, Smith said participants of all ages were divided into teams to take part in the various games. He said he  was impressed with the camaraderie the kids demonstrated.

“Everyone played really nice together,” he said. “The kids got to play, have fun and enjoy themselves.”

While the center had its power restored within a couple of days of the storm, many residents had been without electricity for more than a week, with several downed trees blocking roadways and other obstacles to overcome.

“It felt great to see that doing this helped a lot of people in need,” he said.

Smith said the center is available for other events including birthday parties, soccer tournaments, tennis and open field rentals for both children and adults.
