Allergy Season Packs a Wallop in Greenwich

Despite the heavy layer of pollen coating cars up and down Greenwich streets, residents are doing their best to suffer through allergy season.

Lorna Williams said this season is the first her son, age 12, has been affected. “He’s had really bad allergies, and it really only started just this year,” she said.

Allergies usually bother Carolyn Muller only in September, but this spring has been different. "It’s been really bad,” she said. “I’m just suffering through it and going along--but it’s making me hesitate to open my windows at night.”

Meghan Muldawney has been suffering as well and trying over-the-counter meds, but nothing helps.

“There’s so much pollen everywhere and on everyone’s car, it’s definitely worse than years before,” she said. “I have always had them and I’m always sensitive to them to a degree, but this year it’s been awful.”

For some lucky residents, allergies aren’t a problem, despite this year’s high pollen counts.

“No problems here,” said Amy McGrath. “I don’t have allergies, though, so I’ve been just fine.”

Others say they’ve built up an almost-immunity, having breathed the same air with the same pollen all their lives.

“I grew up breathing this air and I’ve built up an immunity to it, but most people are having a really, really hard time this season, especially since it’s been such a long spring,” said John Twomey.
