Allan Devaul, 82, Former Greenwich Rotary Director

GREENWICH, Conn. – Allan Stuart Devaul of Greenwich died May 7 at his home, surrounded by family. He was 82.

Born Jan. 23, 1930 in Greenwich, he graduated from Greenwich High School in 1946. Devaul earned a degree in civil engineering in 1950 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army's 19th Engineer Combat Group and served during the Korean War.

After the war, he joined S.E. Minor & Co. in Greenwich in 1954. He worked there until retirement. In his youth, Devaul was involved with the Boy Scouts of America, earning the rank of Eagle Scout.

Devaul continued his involvement in Scouting as an adult and received Scouting's highest honor, the Silver Beaver Award, in 1967. A dedicated Rotary member, he served a term as director of the Greenwich Rotary Club.

He also served as the chairman of the board for Greenwich Federal Savings. He enjoyed gardening, sailing on his boat "Liberte," traveling to Norway and spending time with his wife of 31 years, Berit.

Devaul was predeceased by his parents, Willard Rogers Devaul and Beatrice Rea Devaul; a brother, Robert Ashton Devaul; and his first wife, Janet Bruce Devaul, who died of breast cancer in 1980.

He is survived by his children, Leslie (Ross) Emma, of Raleigh, N.C., Tracy (Mark) Milot, of Mendon, Mass., Allison (Michael) Downs, of New Milford, Conn., Stuart (Teresa) Devaul, of Kokomo, Ind., John Jandras, of Norwalk, and Kristin Kolk, of Fairfield; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Stanwich Chapel in Greenwich, followed by a private graveside service at Putnam Cemetery. Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home in Greenwich is handling arrangements.
