These Westchester Stores Are Catering To Last-Minute Shoppers

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- If you waited till the official start of winter to Christmas shop, or just haven't found the perfect gift or stocking stuffer for a loved one, here are some last-minute ideas.

Owner Joe Mazzullo of Awesome Items at 229 Harrison Ave. in Harrison will even assess the value of any malfunctioning train set from Christmases past and offer a trade at his store, which also sells musical instruments, toys and sports memorabilia.   

Just up U.S. 1 in Rye, Jerry's Post Road Market has Irish and British candy and black treacle in a small can and other last-minute treats for parties. 

Rye Country Store on Purchase Street also sells great finishing touches, like holiday cocktail napkins and candles. Molly's Midland Market is equally convenient and festive.

Rye Ridge Shopping Center offers unique items at stores like Domestic Dried Goods, nifty products only produced in the United States, as well as low prices at Ace Hardware, which is going out of business. 

If Awesome Items doesn't have the musical instrument you were looking for, try Division Street Guitars in Peekskill. Owner Paul DeCourcey of Ossining sells guitars, strings, picks and amplifiers at 36 N. Division St.

Kensico Soap Bar at Rose Hill Shopping Center in Thornwood will put you in the holiday spirit with its smells alone. 

For anyone bent on more shopping while saving the planet, try Recologie in New Rochelle, where products (like purses made from tires) are entirely from recycled materials.

A.I. Friedman billed as "the department store for creative people" at Kohl's Plaza in Port Chester offers a variety of arts and crafts items as well as seasonal gift.

For the beer drinker in the family, there are plenty of choices at Half Time Beverage in Mamaroneck, nicknamed "the world's largest beer store." For someone who likes movies, buy a gift certificate to the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema on Central Park Avenue in Yonkers, the only theater in Westchester where you are served food and alcoholic beverages.

You can't go wrong supporting a local bookstore, like the Village Bookstore in Pleasantville or The Voracious Reader In Larchmont.

If you really like to push deadlines or procrastinate, the Katonah Art Museum gift shop will be open Tuesday and until 3 p.m. Wednesday Dec. 24

The Goodwill store on Route 9A in Elmsford will be open until 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve. If you are looking for a missing figurine for a creche, wrapping paper, holiday lights, glassware or unused toys, Goodwill offers many bargains. See the latest bargains online at www.goodwill.org

If shopping malls or village squares have worn you out, there's always the Christmas Tree Shop at 393 Central Ave. in White Plains.
