There will be a race for children in grades K-2, 3-6 and a “Special Spartans” event for challenged kids and parents. The race will be held at Mill River Park at 1050 Washington Blvd.

“This is a partnership of community resources dedicated to building and maintaining a vibrant, world-class green space for Stamford and extended Fairfield County,” said Dan Goldstein, organizer of the Stamford race. “The $100 million urban revitalization of the Mill River Park has transformed downtown Stamford, creating a breathtaking bridge of parkland between the various communities. Their commitment to providing a safe, active green space for families to connect with nature, as well as developed areas for outdoor activity, make them a perfect partner for the Spartan Kids brand,” he said.

The race is the first standalone Spartan Race for children. The race will also engage local government, education, and business resources in partnership to stand behind and support the event's objective: to promote child-like adventure and instill a healthy lifestyle.

The event is targeting 5,000 children, filled with specially designed obstacle courses, healthy food trucks, experiential brand activations, and much more. Spartan Kids will compel the communities they activate in to rally behind the “Get Healthy, Get Active, Have Fun” mission through a campaign leading up to the main event, and leave them with the tools to keep the mission alive for years to come. “What we’re trying to do is create an experience that emphasizes fun and nutrition,” Goldstein said.

The Spartan Kids Race offers two distances. Based on age (4-13), the Kids races have obstacles in them just like the grown-up versions. Spartan Junior Varsity ½  mile distance (ages 4-8); Spartan Varsity 1 mile distance (ages 9-14); and Special Spartans—a transformative event for challenged kids and proud parents alike.

The Special Spartans heat welcomes a whole new breed of Spartans: racers with intellectual or developmental disabilities, and those with cognitive learning or vocational delays. Utilizing the Spartans Kids course, they accommodate the sensory profiles, physical and cognitive limitations, and behavioral issues associated with the challenges faced with race participants. “What’s exciting here is that for challenged children, it’s not always as accessible as for able-bodied children,” Goldstein said. “But we are inviting them to race in tandem.”

Parents are also invited to crawl under netting, jump through tires and carry objects for short distances along with their children. At the Spartan races, the emphasis is on creating an experience that emphasizes fun and nutrition,” Goldstein said. Each finisher will receive a free Spartan T-shirt and finisher’s medal.
