Featuring a garden, benches, looped pathways and specially constructed therapeutic features, Waveny's newly renovated back patio and garden was recently opened with a shared ribbon cutting by Bill Piper, Waveny CEO and Gerry Roberts, president of Waveny Care Center’s Resident Council. “This gift is what compassion looks like,” said Roberts. “It’s a unifying symbol of the entire Waveny community coming together and reaching out. This garden helps us to find inner peace and to talk with nature.”

"The benefits of our therapeutic patio are numerous," said Jean Gleeson, Waveny's director of therapeutic recreation. "It offers a quiet, peaceful setting where residents, family members and staff can be together enjoying the great outdoors."

At the patio’s center is a colorful compass spanning in the four cardinal directions. "On any given day, residents can be seen participating in games, discussions or even getting manicures," said Gleeson. "Barbecues are also a popular event for our residents. It's nice to have the option during the nice weather to hold our programs outside."

Beyond being a peaceful and serene destination, the new patio is a therapeutically functional area designed to assist in both physical and occupational therapy for Waveny’s short-term and outpatient rehab patients. It offers three distinct walking surfaces and includes steps of varying heights to help patients practice stair climbing. A ramp platform with side railings and mailboxes of varying heights also help patients to regain independence and practice important activities of daily living.

"Our inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation teams are extremely grateful to have an outside environment where we can simulate basic activities such as stepping on and off a curb, negotiating a ramp and using several steps with a handrail," said Suzanne Cleary, MS, OTR, director of rehabilitation. "The individuals receiving therapy love spending time in such a beautiful environment while learning new techniques."
