Kids will have a chance to learn all about safety during Safety Town a one-week safety education program offered that teaches awareness and accident prevention skills to children entering kindergarten in the fall.

Originally brought to the area by the Junior League of Greenwich, Safety Town is now a program offered by the American Red Cross Greater New York Region.

Led by teachers, police officers, firefighters, EMS and other community helpers, children will have a chance to learn on a specially designed kid-sized “Safety Town” layout.

Children are fitted with their own bike safety helmet that they use for the week, and then take home to keep. They ride pedal cars, walk and “shop” through the town complete with buildings, crosswalks, sidewalks, and street markings. They also tour an ambulance, fire truck and school bus.

Daily lessons are followed up with take-home handouts and additional reference information for parents and caregivers. At the end of each week of training, the graduates each received a Safety Town diploma.

Four weekly sessions are running at the Eastern Greenwich Civic Center at 90 Harding Road, Old Greenwich, June 4 to 15.

Morning sessions run 9 to 11:30 a.m. and the afternoon session from 12:30 to 3 p.m.. For information and questions, please call 203-869-8444 or email safetytown.GNY@redcross.or g.
