The goal of the Greenwich Town Party is to create an annual celebration for the residents to come together and participate in a day of music, food, fun, family, and friendship and to experience the strength of community.
“In the spirit of mutual generosity, we urge the community to embrace the Greenwich spirit and make this event better than ever by giving back: donating what they can, sponsoring, buying tickets or volunteering. The day is an expression of contribution and how we help each other. Town-wide participation truly has made this party a success year after year," a Greenwich Town Party organizer says on the event's website.
The Greenwich Town Party is the brainchild of one community-minded resident who was inspired while visiting his wife's home country of Spain, where he saw the unifying effect of an annual town party.
The Greenwich Town Party was born in 2011. The soldout event drew a crowd of 3,500 people and included musical performances from Toots and the Maytals, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, The Temptations, Little Feat, and blues legend and six-time Grammy Award winner Buddy Guy.
The second annual GTP in 2012 featured The Wailers, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Kirk Franklin, Tedeschi Trucks Band, and 12-time Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter, Paul Simon.
In May 2013, the third Annual GTP brought out Grammy Award-winning singer James Taylor, Blues Traveler, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Michael Franti & Spearhead, and singer-songwriter Caroline Jones of Greenwich.
In May 2014, a second venue was added, with GTP North at Havemeyer Field and GTP South at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park. Musical performers including Carlos Santana, George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic, Buddy Guy, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, The Fab Faux, Dr. Dog and local bands; food from local restaurants, food trucks and caterers, and kids activities at each venue.
