'Man Of La Mancha' Comes To Curtain Call In Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. --- "Man of La Mancha" comes Stamford at Curtain Call's Kweskin Theatre on Friday, Feb. 6, and continues through Feb. 28.

This 50th anniversary production celebrates of one of the best-loved musicals of all time, "Man of La Mancha," which was created at The Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut in 1965. "Man of La Mancha" is an inspiring musical based on Miguel de Cervantes’s novel "Don Quixote."

The musical won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, as well as a Tony for Best Composer and Lyricist. Mitch Leigh wrote the music and Joe Darion the lyrics.

The original 1965 production ran for more than 2,300 performances and has been revived four times on Broadway, becoming one of the most enduring works of musical theater.

"'La Mancha' is one of my all time favorite musicals" said Lou Ursone, Curtain Call's executive director and producer for this production. "The score is stunning and the poignant story of this dying old man make it a remarkable theatrical experience."

Gordon Casagrande of Ridgefield, who has directed some of Curtain Call's most popular musicals ("Fiddler on the Roof," "My Fair Lady" and "1776") is on hand to direct again, with his wife Karen handling choreography. Music direction is by Eric Johnston of New York City.

The cast of 20 features, from Stamford: Ted Yudain as Cervantes/Don Quixote, Rachel Schulte as Aldonza, Bruce Crilly as the Padre, Mike DeSalvo as Juan, Mary Fairbank as Fermina, Julia Falkenburg as Antonia, Lauren Gulliver as the Housekeeper, Eric Hu as Tenorio, Michael Kraus as Jose, Carol Shwidock as Maria and Dan Travers as the Barber; from Norwalk: Andy Garfunkel as Pedro and Michael Stark as Anselmo; from Easton, Joseph Kipper as the Innkeeper; from Wilton, Kyle Runestad as Carrasco; from Stratford: Kevin Kiley as Jorge; from Brookfield, David Alvarez as Guard; from the Bronx, N.Y.; William Russell as Sancho; from Shrub Oak, N.Y.; Stephen Wolf as the Captain and from Woodstock, N.H.; and Olivia Etchings as the mule.

Set design is by Fairfield resident Peter Barbieri Jr., with costumes by Megan Latte Ormond of Stamford and lighting design by Scott Borowka of Astoria, N.Y.

The stage management team is lead by Jan Ursone of Stamford with Jeff Bianco of Norwalk, Steven Kelly of Greenwich and Brent McKinley, of Stamford.

Performances of "Man of La Mancha" will play Feb. 6 through Feb. 28, with Friday through Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. in The Kweskin Theatre, The Sterling Farms Theatre Complex, 1349 Newfield Ave., Stamford. Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. will be offered as well
